Montana Fall Fishing Strategies

Sportsmen's Access/Frontier Angler's

It’s fall and the fishing in Montana is great! Currently many people are in pursuit of big game and game birds; this leaves many of the state's rivers and streams uncrowded. With fewer anglers on the water and cooler weather, many of the larger fish are out and feeding aggressively. Even though the temperatures have dropped dramatically statewide over the past few weeks, dry fly fishing is still a viable option on many of our waters.

2006 Montana Pheasant Hunting Outlook

Sportsmen's Access
Grant's Pheasant

For the best pheasant hunting, make plans to hunt the best regions in terms of pheasant densities- First 6, then 4, and then 7. If travel to these regions is not practical, try Regions 5, 3, 2 and 1 respectively. Regions 6 and 4 offer some of the best habitat for birds, and access is still available in lots of areas. There is strong participation in the Block Management and Upland Enhancement programs in Regions 6, 7 and 4, and there are lots of state trust lands with public access. One of members, Grant [pictured on the right], took his first pheasant in Region 6 this fall.

Mapping Engine Scores a Hit for Sportsmen

Jerry Furniss, Founder
Turkey Taken On Trust Lands

Sportsmen's Access has joined forces with a GIS mapping company to identify state trust lands near large Montana ranches. These often overlooked and under-hunted and fished properties, represent a significant sporting opportunity for hunters and fishermen. Each piece of targeted property is encircled in a red border to identify the area where there is a high probability of public access. Company founder [picured on right] shows off a bird he took on "targeted" trust lands. These properties are readily identified using Sportsmen's Access mapping layers.
